Dr. Prose Ivy Guasa-Yepes, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) president, received an Outstanding Southern Leyteños (OSL) award on June 28, 2017 at SP Session Hall, Legislative Building, Provincial Capitol, Maasin City during the 57th Founding Anniversary of the Province of Southern Leyte celebration.

She was honored for her exemplary achievements in the field of educational leadership, industry research, extension and instruction. Some of the outputs of her stewardship and leadership of SLSU were the  Center of Development (COD) in Teacher Education programs,  ISO 9001:2008 QMS certification,  two Commission on Higher Education (CHED) accredited Research Journals: Journal of Education and Human Resource Development (JEHRD) and Journal of Science, Engineering and Technology (JSET), and the SLSU Journals Online System.

Because of her passion to initiate and create reforms that would transform the university to serve its constituents, clientele and the community people in the service areas, she spearheaded the reviving of the abaca industry in the province by hosting the Abaca Summit in 2015. The Coalition of Abaca got the initial P50 M funding of the P100 M proposed projects from the Department of Agriculture. As part of the abaca rehabilitation program, SLSU got the project in doing Geographic Information Systems (GIS)- based abaca benchmarking and monitoring.

To further help the farmers of the province, Dr. Yepes accepted to host the Cacao Industry Summit last August 3-4, 2016 which further led to Cacao Road Map in the region and the submission of the proposal to Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for the establishment of Regional Cacao Center.

“This award inspires me more to help the local, municipal and provincial government officials improve the quality of life of my fellow southern Leyteños by diligently performing its mandated functions as a higher education institution in the areas of instruction, research, development and extension and by instituting reform initiatives, programs and projects that would somehow alleviate the community people’s lives within the bounds of the university’s capacities,” Dr. Yepes in her speech which was delivered by her mother Ms. Olivia L. Guasa, a former professor of SLSU.

Further, she dedicated her award to SLSU and its clientele and stakeholders, to PROSVIA, Tribu Guasa, Lopez and Yepes Families, and most especially to her late father, Mr. Prospero Abarca Guasa. She also thanked the OSL Search Committee for choosing her as one of the awardees.

Mr. Penuel A. Yepes, her husband, and Ms. Olivia Lopez-Guasa, her mother, received the award on behalf of Dr. Yepes who had a very important appointment with CHED, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) and Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP).

The award was made possible because of the nomination of SLSU’s Science Research Specialist Ms. Veronica L. Reoma.
